Celebrating the 9th Year of MAD Art for the Cancer Community

On July 17, Theatre Within brought the MAD Art workshop — led by former MAD Art Director Sam Viviano — to the Red Door Community for children impacted by cancer. For this special workshop, Sam had two high-profile models — WWE superstars Joe Hendry and Jacob Fatu. 

Now in its ninth year, Theatre Within's MAD Art workshop continues to bring laughter and light to children and families navigating the challenges of a cancer diagnosis. The program provides a safe, nurturing space where participants can immerse themselves in the fun world of cartooning and self-expression.

This particular session was filled with a joyful energy from the moment it began. Stepping away from the bright lights of the wrestling ring, Fatu and Hendry sat at tables alongside the children, picked up markers, and jumped right into the drawing lesson. Under Sam’s encouraging guidance, the kids learned how to sketch the unique features and expressions of their two special guests.

By sharing a few hours together, the children, the wrestlers, and Sam connected through the art of caricature. Through this wonderful collaboration, the workshop provided families with an afternoon of humor and community.

Since the fall of 2015, Theatre Within has partnered with the Red Door Community, where no one faces cancer along, to bring workshops in creativity and mindfulness to cancer patients and their family members.
